This afternoon, I got an email titled "Byrd's Filling Station is a winner!" and I immediately wondered why my Spam Filter had failed. When I opened it, though, I quickly realized it wasn't spam and it wasn't a joke... we had really been named a Nextdoor 2022 Neighborhood Favorite Grocery Store! While Byrd's has existed for over 3 years, our physical location that serves groceries has only been open for about 3 months. We are still working hard to figure out how to spread the word that we are here, so it was thrilling to know that the community who knows us thinks that we're a favorite.
These last 3 months have been wonderful and exhausting all at the same time. When I left my corporate finance career, I envisioned stepping away from the 13-hour work days and feeling less stressed out. The store is a passion project for me, so the stress doesn't feel nearly as bad but the 13-hour days seem to happen frequently. It's a joy to be in the store and talk to customers about what concerns they have, how they are trying to set goals and find ways to be more conscious consumers, and what products would be helpful on that journey. Wouldn't have it any other way.
